The Principal/HOD Science
Dear Sir/Madam,
RE: The CSSP National Competitions 2019 – Titration Competition, ‘Chem Knowledge Battle’ & ‘Bio Knowledge Battle’
On behalf of The Chemical Society of the South Pacific (CSSP), I would like to invite your School to participate in our annual competitions: ‘Titration Competition’, ‘Chem Knowledge Battle’ & ‘Bio Knowledge Battle’ - 2019. As part of the CSSP mission and vision, we hope to provide students with the opportunity to explore the science(s) of chemistry & biology through these competitions, where they can build their interest, test their knowledge and skills, as well meet like-minded science students from around their towns/cities.
As practiced in previous years, the preliminary competitions in the various zones will be held first, the details of which are provided below. Upon successful completion of the preliminary competitions (qualifying), the details for the finals will then be sent accordingly (at a later date).

Please take note of the following information and requirements for these competitions.
- Titration Competition
The experiment for this competition is selected in accordance with the Ministry of Education curriculum. As this is a national competition, however, participants must be prepared to apply their knowledge of titration concepts at a higher level (of difficulty) than what is normally required by the syllabi. The competition is open to one participant from each school for each of the following levels:
Senior Division (Year 12): Acid/Base (application)
Advanced Division (Year 13): Redox Titration (application)
The registration form can be found at the end of this letter. The filled form must be sent by email or post to the CSSP (details ahead) on or before Friday, May 30th, 2019.
- ‘Chem Knowledge Battle’ and ‘Bio Knowledge Battle’
The questions for the competition(s) will be in accordance with the Ministry of Education syllabi (Years 11-13) and the team may consist of members from any of these levels, as it is an open category. Since this is a national competition, we expect students to know a bit more than what is normally required by the syllabi.
With regards to the ‘Chem Knowledge Battle’, in order to solve the ongoing issue with significant figures, we will place the rules for chemistry at the website. Secondly, to remove ambiguity, significant figure rules will be given out to all the schools this year and the final answers have been moderated and cross checked. We will also be using the whole values and only be rounding off at the final answer.
Entry will be given to one team per school. In an effort to allow maximum student participation, schools must take note that participants of one competition must not be competing in any of the other competitions detailed in this letter, i.e. schools must have different participants for the Titration Competition, ‘Chem Knowledge Battle’ and ‘Bio Knowledge Battle’. Any student found participating in multiple competitions will face immediate disqualification.
Please click here to download a copy of the Registration Form. The filled form must be sent by email to the CSSP (details ahead) on or before Friday, May 30th, 2019.
We look forward to your school’s participation. For any queries, please feel free to contact the undersigned.
Yours faithfully,
Ms. Janice Mani
CSSP Secretary
